WESTERN Queensland woolgrowers will soon be able to better manage seasonal fluctuations thanks to a landmark climate forecasting research project being conducted in the region.

The project – Improved Seasonal Forecasts for Wool Producers in the Western Zone - aims to deliver accurate, region-specific seasonal forecasts to growers up to six months ahead, enabling them to make productive and environmentally-sound management decisions based on potential rainfall.

A major research project taking place in the Midlands region of Tasmania is proving just how important native pastures are to fine wool production – and the importance of grazing to maintaining habitat for certain threatened plant species.

The Tasmanian regional project, Biodiversity conservation integrated into sustainable grazing systems, is looking at how woolgrowers currently manage their native vegetation for production purposes on-farm.

South Australia’s Mid North region is the location of a new grower-focused research project aimed at lifting woolgrowers’ profits through improved grazing management of native pastures.

Some growers involved aim to achieve significant increases in pasture utilisation rates - doubling current rates in some cases. The project 'Managing native pastures in South Australia for improved animal production and biodiversity' will help woolgrowers to conserve and improve native pasture biodiversity by rotational grazing, and boost profits through increased production.

North-East Woolgrowers Lead Native Vegetation Research

A group of north-east Victorian woolgrowers is exploring the critical role of native vegetation management as part of a healthy and productive farming business through a research project aiming to improve wool production on farms.

The research project involves nine case study farms throughout Victoria, in the Springhurst region, the Ararat Hills district and the Maryborough Lexton region in central and western Victoria.

The landmark project will help identify productive, practical solutions for native vegetation management, incorporating the commercial aspects of wool growing and sheep breeding, according to project leader, Jim Moll, a senior agribusiness analyst with the Department of Sustainability and Environment at Benalla.

The Tasmanian Midlands was one of the earliest settled areas in Australia and is renowned internationally for its fine wool production.

The Midlands project will examine the impact of different grazing systems on the upper Macquarie River and then develop strategies for improving its health by trialing a range of management techniques.

RESULTS from a trial in Victoria’s Western District are showing that saline-affected ground can be productive and profitable for woolgrowers.

The project, ‘Productive and Sustainable Salt-tolerant Pastures for South Australia and Victoria’, is located on Peter Hayes’ property ‘Balintore’, near Dunkeld. It is lead by Dr Malcolm McCaskill, Senior Research Scientist, Department of Primary Industries Victoria in Hamilton.

Improved Saltland Pastures Lifts SA Woolgrowers Profits

A new woolgrower-led project is underway in the Kingston region of the Upper South-East aimed at boosting productivity from saltland pastures.

Run by the Kingston Salinity Group, the project will help woolgrowers to conserve and improve productivity from saline land through better grazing and fertiliser management.

According to SGSL Producer Network Project Officer Jock McFarlane, from Rural Solutions SA, about 40 per cent of properties in the Kingston region are affected by waterlogging and salinity.
