A passion for operating successful, profitable and environmentally sympathetic wool-based businesses in the pastoral zone typifies five woolgrower families profiled in the latest Land, Water & Wool Insights publication.

Covering one-fifth of Australia’s continent, pastoral zone properties are bigger, dryer and more reliant on native vegetation systems than any other group of woolgrowers in Australia.

The Managing Pastoral Country Sub-program has worked with woolgrowers to identify how pastoral country can be better managed to address key environmental issues while maintaining productivity.

'Smorgasbord' of options for biodiversity gains

A four-year research project has identified 42 different ways to improve both wool profits and biodiversity conservation on farms in the Northern Tablelands region of NSW.

The project found the most cost-effective way of boosting biodiversity on farms is to identify systems and investments that are profitable, therefore encouraging greater private investment from woolgrowers to improve their natural resource base as well as yielding a return on investment.

Many woolgrowers are already generating profit and enhancing biodiversity on their farms through a range of mechanisms, ranging from choice of grazing system, to smaller-scale interventions such as riparian zone protection, wetland creation, shelterbelts and retention of native vegetation.

Peering into the future to plan for today

Delegates at the recent VegFutures 2006 conference in Albury were treated to a journey into the realms of the future for natural resource management in Australia courtesy of the wool industry’s Land, Water & Wool Future Woolscapes initiative.

The future scoping session explored what on-farm natural resource management in the year 2030 may look like. The entertaining session revolved around a mock radio interview with a woolgrower set in the future, followed by a facilitated and interactive 'hypothetical' panel session to discuss and debate the interview, the 'Future Woolscapes' scenarios and how they relate to today’s operating environment for woolgrowers and broadacre grazing more generally.
