SOUTH Australia’s pastoral zone is the focus of a new climate risk project aimed at lifting northern woolgrowers’ profits through improved use of seasonal forecasting tools.

The project will help woolgrowers in low rainfall areas to more effectively use climate forecasts when making grazing management decisions for the season ahead.

The project currently involves 40 woolgrowers stretching from north of Port Augusta to east of Burra. The average annual rainfall in this region is less than 350 millimetres and rainfall distribution is highly variable.

South Australia’s Mid North region is the location of a new grower-focused research project aimed at lifting woolgrowers’ profits through improved grazing management of native pastures.

Some growers involved aim to achieve significant increases in pasture utilisation rates - doubling current rates in some cases. The project 'Managing native pastures in South Australia for improved animal production and biodiversity' will help woolgrowers to conserve and improve native pasture biodiversity by rotational grazing, and boost profits through increased production.

RESULTS from a trial in Victoria’s Western District are showing that saline-affected ground can be productive and profitable for woolgrowers.

The project, ‘Productive and Sustainable Salt-tolerant Pastures for South Australia and Victoria’, is located on Peter Hayes’ property ‘Balintore’, near Dunkeld. It is lead by Dr Malcolm McCaskill, Senior Research Scientist, Department of Primary Industries Victoria in Hamilton.

BOOSTING wool growing profits from saline land in the State’s Upper South-East is the aim of a series of new on-farm research projects being undertaken in the region.

Strategic grazing, nitrogen fertiliser applications, and use of Balansa clover are just some of the management techniques being examined by the five-year Land, Water & Wool Sustainable Grazing on Saline Lands (SGSL) project, which is being conducted on two separate sites in the Mount Charles area, west of Keith.

Making a profit while dealing with on-farm salinity is the subject of a research project that is exploring whether money can be made while unproductive land is restored to health in the Liverpool Plains region.

Alleys of trees and pasture will be established and monitored across about 30 hectares of land on Stephen and Wendy Millar's Spring Ridge, NSW, property 'Chevy Chase' with the aim of rejuvenating about 5 ha of salinity-affected land within the block.

Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) is a fully independent public company limited by shares and owned by Australian woolgrowers. It invests wool levy funds paid by woolgrowers and R&D (research and development) contributions from the Australian Government for the benefit of Australian woolgrowers and the Australian community.

AWI also exists to serve woolgrowers' clear call for major change in the processes by which industry funds are invested. AWI intends to reshape the way wool industry research, development and innovation is delivered. Working with Land & Water Australia, AWI's aim with Land, Water & Wool was to ensure woolgrowers are informed by researchers and can inform researchers in return.
