Woolgrowers in the Moora-Miling area are working together to combat the spread of salt and improve grazing opportunities on salt affected land as part of a new research project.

In an innovative approach they are improving their pastures and at the same time lowering the shallow water table to improve production and profit from grazing saline land.

According to SGSL team member, John Paul Collins, the project will establish a mixed pasture system on saline land to increase stock grazing days in autumn and to lower shallow water tables reducing the spread of salt-affected land.

The on-farm research is being carried out on B F White & Co’s 3000 hectare property at Miling in WA’s wheatbelt. For Tony White the project holds great promise as it will allow him to continue production on saline land that is otherwise unproductive.

Self-Help Ethos Attracts Saltland Research to Tammin

FOR most of the 1990s, saltbush was regarded by many as worthless for sheep feed, even though it was one of the few plants able to tolerate high levels of salt. But Tammin farmer and wool grower Tony York was one of a small band who believed it was part of the solution to living with salinity and continued to plant it.

This ‘self-help’ ethos among a group of local WA wheatbelt farmers has led to Tammin recently becoming an important Land, Water & Wool Sustainable Grazing on Saline Lands (SGSL) site.

Project manager Robyn Dynes from CSIRO Livestock Industries said enthusiastic support from the Saltland Pastures Association and in particular, Tony York and his family had made Tammin the location for research into the economics of saltbush on farms.

Making Saline Land Profitable

Wool growers in the Great Southern are bringing their previously unproductive saline land back into production in order to increase farm profits and the sustainable balance across their farms.

In a bid to increase production and profit from grazing saline land, the on-farm research project is working on establishing forage and pastures on salt affected land to enable them to be profitably grazed.

This new research is aiming to turn saline land in the region into an asset in terms of its impact on farmers’ incomes and on the environment. The project, ‘Bedar’s living haystack: sustainable saltland forage and pasture’, is based around the Kurrenkutten Lakes and is located on Grant Robinson’s property, ‘Bedar Farm’.

In an effort to improve production and profit from grazing saline land, a Land, Water & Wool Sustainable Grazing on Saline Land (SGSL) on-farm research project is working on saltbush and understorey species to come up with the perfect mix to fill the autumn feed gap.
