Making a profit while dealing with on-farm salinity is the subject of a research project that is exploring whether money can be made while unproductive land is restored to health in the Liverpool Plains region.

Alleys of trees and pasture will be established and monitored across about 30 hectares of land on Stephen and Wendy Millar's Spring Ridge, NSW, property 'Chevy Chase' with the aim of rejuvenating about 5 ha of salinity-affected land within the block.

The Rivers & Water Quality sub-program has developed two new fact sheets to provide valuable information about gullies and in-stream wetlands, and the best ways to manage them on-farm.

Managing gullies on wool-producing farms.

This fact sheet from the Land, Water & Wool Program summarises information about gullies, their prevention and management. The gully project was established in 2003 in the Yass region of New South Wales with the specific aim of testing and demonstrating options for gully management that growers can consider. The fact sheet discusses the conditions under which particular management strategies work best so that growers can choose the approach that will work best on their farm. While the fact sheet is based on the outcomes of this project, the information and advice is applicable to many areas of the tablelands in Queensland, New South Walesand Victoriawhere sodic subsoils are easily eroded and gullies are common.

'Smorgasbord' of options for biodiversity gains

A four-year research project has identified 42 different ways to improve both wool profits and biodiversity conservation on farms in the Northern Tablelands region of NSW.

The project found the most cost-effective way of boosting biodiversity on farms is to identify systems and investments that are profitable, therefore encouraging greater private investment from woolgrowers to improve their natural resource base as well as yielding a return on investment.

Many woolgrowers are already generating profit and enhancing biodiversity on their farms through a range of mechanisms, ranging from choice of grazing system, to smaller-scale interventions such as riparian zone protection, wetland creation, shelterbelts and retention of native vegetation.
