How to manage gullies and in-stream wetlands on-farm

The Rivers & Water Quality sub-program has developed two new fact sheets to provide valuable information about gullies and in-stream wetlands, and the best ways to manage them on-farm.

* Managing gullies on wool-producing farms.

This fact sheet from the Land, Water & Wool Program summarises information about gullies, their prevention and management.

The gully project was established in 2003 in the Yass region of New South Wales with the specific aim of testing and demonstrating options for gully management that growers can consider. The fact sheet discusses the conditions under which particular management strategies work best so that growers can choose the approach that will work best on their farm.

While the fact sheet is based on the outcomes of this project, the information and advice is applicable to many areas of the tablelands in Queensland, New South Walesand Victoriawhere sodic subsoils are easily eroded and gullies are common.

* Managing in-stream wetlands on wool-producing farms:

In-stream wetlands improve water quality by filtering out sediment and nutrients eroded from areas upslope. The fact sheet outlines different management strategies for woolgrowers to use so that in-stream wetlands can be managed for both environmental and production benefits.

The benefits of establishing and maintaining in-stream wetlands are improved water quality on the farm and for other down stream users. Time spent chasing sheep out of these areas is also reduced when a fence is used to manage access. Greater habitat diversity and health of waterways are important environmental benefits.

The project is based in the Yass region of New South Wales with links to work being conducted by the CSIRO Murrumbidgee catchment Open Air Laboratory on the functions and management of in-stream wetlands.

This fact sheet is applicable to many areas where in-stream wetlands are a natural and common feature of the landscape.
